Find and Compare Credit Cards Online
Credit cards. They're incredibly useful but easily abused.
The key to responsible credit card use is to not buy what you really don't
need. Also, don't use credit cards as a means to subsidize your personal cash
flow.
If you decide to apply for a credit card, here is what you need to know before you select a credit card company:
- Interest: Make sure you know in advance how much you're going to be charged by the credit card company. They will look at how much you've charged to your card in the past and then multiply that by the interest rate. The important fact of credit card interest is to find the card with the lowest possible fixed rate.
- Since interest rates go up and down, your situation depends on many different factors. If you have a variable interest rate, for example, the credit card company could offer a 9% rate when you apply, then possibly change it to a much higher rate later. If you currently have a fixed rate, then they can't do it. In addition, be aware that some offers mean that you'll have a lower rate for the first year, and then the company will increase the rate significantly later.
- Balance: This is the amount of money that you have been charged on your credit card, plus any applicable finance charges. The best plan is to only charge what you can afford to pay in full that month. If an unexpected expense arises, and you can't pay the balance in full, you should pay the maximum amount you can afford without taking too much money away from your other expenses.
