Apply for Credit Reports and Credit Monitoring

There are a few ways to get a copy of your free credit report: 1) contact one of the following credit-reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax or TransUnion) through written correspondence, 2) by calling them up, or the most popular option 3) by going to their online sites. The benefits of the third option: you will get a very quick response.

Going directly through one of these agencies will help you get the most up-to-date version of your free credit report. If you approach the agency directly, you'll cut the chances of a middleman getting involved in your mission. You can also check your yellow pages under Credit Agency or credit bureau to see if any subordinate group is available locally to give you the free credit report, but be careful though: most of them get their information from only one of the three national bureaus, and each of them may have different information depending on who has reported to them and what was reported. What is on one report may be different from another.

If you do request a copy of your report from a lender who has just approved or denied you of credit, they are legally obligated to mail you a copy of the full report for free. Although this process is somewhat time consuming, you'll be better able see a full copy of your credit report without paying for one.
